At almost 1/4th the price of my Nikon.I'll take it!Ĭons: Hey.the plastic holders are what they are.

Scans of negatives, using digital ICE, takes minutes (I believe 3-4 minutes). The advantage to scanning prints versus negatives is print scans take less than 10 seconds.

However, to my surprise, scanning prints on the Epson, using only 300 dpi and Epson's software based dust and scratch removal tool, I got excellent results. Having used digital ICE I would not buy a scanner to scan negatives that did not have this feature. The digital ICE feature (which is hardware based like the Nikon) is only used when scanning negatives on this scanner, and it works great to remove dust and scratch marks. I took a chance on this Epson scanner because of the digital ICE feature and the price after rebate. The Nikon was wonderful but I couldn't justify the $500+ I had tied up in it since I only shoot limited amounts of film. Pros: I had a Nikon Coolscan V (LS50) before buying this scanner. This is a welcome change from the Canon scanner software as some settings ALWAYS caused a crash and could not be used. The Epson software is totally stable and I have not found any scanner settings that cause the scanner software to crash.

This is unlike the Canon auto settings that tended to wash out light colored portions of photos.

Overall Review: The automatic settings work very well and I haven't had to delve into any manual controls. I found that a plastic toothpick is handy for getting under an edge to lift them out. When scanning old slides in plastic carriers, it is very difficult to get them out without dislodging everything. The slide holder slips out of place easily when trying to get the slides out of the holders. It was handy to alert me to put in another batch of slides when I was off doing something else.

I believe a faster PC may improve those scan times.Ĭons: I miss the "play sound when done scanning" option that I had with the Canon scanner, but that isn't a big deal. I am running a 1.8 MHz single-core CPU running XP and with "Digital ICE" turned on which adds a bit of time. Scan times are great also - 12 minutes to scan 4 slides at 2400 DPI compared to my Canoscan 8400f which took just under 1 hour to scan 4 slides at 1600 DPI. The quality is just as good as my previous Canon scanner which I thought was fantastic (while it worked), and the resolution is better (of course technology has improved). The Epson software is absolutely fantastic - it allows you to scan multiple images (both slides AND prints) in one "session". So I decided to return to Epson after my bad experience with Canon. My old old old Epson 1200 scanner is still working fine, but can't scan slides. I purchased it after my 2 previous Canon Canoscan 8400f scanners "died" (sensor failed to calibrate after about 9 months of use). Pros: This is the 4th flatbed scanner I have owned. If this unit hadn't broken, it would have been given a much better review. However, it will be a long time before I will buy anything else made by Epson. Overall Review: As part of the "final" solution, Epson also indicated that it might be cheaper to buy a new unit. The first suggestion was re-installing software! Their final answer is to deliver the unit to some "local" repair shop some 150 miles away, with a copy of the receipt to prove warranty in effect. If you want to speak to a person, you must call (banker's hours) long distance and wait on hold for 10-20 min. The software took a bit to figure out, but it is usable.Īs usual, Newegg price & delivery was fantastic!Ĭons: Epson service is TERRIBLE! The unit developed a defect within a couple of months: A red line is now added to all my films.

Unfortunately, ICE doesn't work forīlack & White. Saved me hours of extra touch-up trying to remove dust. Bought this to migrate my extensive 35mm and large format negatives to digital.
